What is an egress window? The word egress by definition means exit. Egress windows are safety basement fire escape windows that allow for escape from and rescue entry into a basement in case of an emergency such as a fire. A basement emergency escape window must meet certain building code requirements to be considered an egress window.

Colorado & Illinois Residents:
Egress windows are vital for the safety of your family. Although smoke detectors are excellent warning devices, they are useless without a means of escape from your home.  Egress windows are also required by law in all new construction and finishing of basements.

J&J Contractors will provide you with a complimentary layout of the best design for your future finished basement to ensure that the location of your egress window accommodates your future vision. J&J Contractors specializes in building beautiful basements so you can be certain that your egress window and design layout will portray the highest quality of aesthetics.

Colorado Residents:
J&J Contractors urges you to choose your egress window company, egress window contractor with great caution. Be certain that whomever you hire to construct your egress windows holds a Class C Construction Supervisors License in the City of Denver. Why a Class C License? Because this license is required by law to pull a permit for the construction or alteration of any structural repair or modification to a residential building. Why Denver? Because the City of Denver is the only city within the entire Front Range that requires proof of at least 2 years experience building residential homes from the ground up. The construction of an egress window involves major structural modifications to the exterior structural foundation walls of your home. This is not a job for a simple window replacement company.

Few egress window companies hold the appropriate license and their current practice is to sway people away from pulling permits claiming it is not required or necessary to do so. Pulling a permit is imperative for safety because it ensures that a town inspector will come to your home and verify that your egress window is in compliance with current residential building code requirements ensuring the safety of the building and all of it’s occupants. Pulling a permit is not only important for your safety but also important in preventing problems when selling your home and for insurance company verification. When a permit is issued, a record is kept on file stating that the work that was done in your home was in compliance with the current building codes requirements.

J&J Contractors, LLC holds a Class C Supervisors License in the City of Denver and Aurora which allows us to pull a permit in any city in the Denver Metro Area. Not only are we the most qualified company, we also have the best prices in the industry. Additionally, because we specialize in basement finishing we can assure you that the location of your egress window will accommodate your future basement design. 2006 International Residential Building Codes requires that at least one egress window and window well meeting current dimensional code requirements and ladder specifications is installed in every new construction or basement finish and if there is to be a bedroom located in the basement the egress window must be located within the confines of this bedroom.
